Salary Range/ Wage Rate: PG T29 $3,785.23 - $4,475.43 bi-weeklY

Our Parks & Environment Department is seeking a Landscape Architect who will advance the design and development of regional park projects across the regional park system.  

You are: a talented and experienced Landscape Architect dedicated to providing exceptional experiences in nature. You value conservation and the benefits that accessing nature provides people of all ages and abilities. You thrive in a team environment, have experience in all aspects of park planning, design and construction with a particular focus on trails and amenities in large natural parks.

This role:

  • Performs a variety of park design activities; prepares conceptual plans; detailed designs; specifications; maps and drawings; budget estimates; reports and presentations and; ensures that projects conform to corporate, municipal, contractual and environmental guidelines, goals and initiatives.
  • Participates in identifying parks requirements and establishing park planning priorities as related to the work performed; participates in planning and feasibility studies; provides professional landscape design guidance to professional, technical and operational staff, outside consultants and contractors.
  • Prepares a variety of reports and recommendations related to the work and presents to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Develops and updates corporate standards and guidelines for park design and related construction; ensures standards and guidelines are followed and consistency is maintained.
  • Coordinates the implementation of park projects with other staff, consultants and contractors; recommends specification changes as required; clarifies plans and specifications for construction personnel.
  • Assembles, researches, analyzes and interprets a variety of files, books, documents, maps and technical information pertaining to park planning and design.
  • Maintains liaison with a variety of internal and external departments on matters related to the work; attends and/or organizes meetings and focus groups with department and various committees related to park planning and design.
  • Reviews and evaluates tenders; recommends selection of and oversees the work of contractors engaged in design work.
  • Performs related work as required.

To be successful, you have:

  • University graduation in Landscape Architecture or related discipline, preferably at the post-graduate level, and considerable related experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Registered Landscape Architect in the Province of British Columbia.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of landscape architecture.
  • Considerable knowledge of landscape construction methods and materials and of horticultural techniques and practices.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures applicable to park planning as it relates to the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of the policies, procedures, and by-laws governing the work.
  • Ability to develop conceptual plans, cost estimates and prepare or oversee preparation of detailed specifications for park developments.
  • Ability to organize and conduct meetings and collect input from various sources and resolve conflicting demands.
  • Ability to coordinate the planning and implementation of park development projects with other staff and monitor the work in progress.
  • Ability to prepare and monitor budgets for specific projects.
  • Ability to prepare and present reports and recommendations to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain liaison with a variety of internal and external contacts, to provide advice and assistance on park projects to departmental staff and to represent the department as required.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ability to supervise the work of one or more subordinates engaged in technical work and to assist in selecting and overseeing the work of consultants.
  • Skill in the use of drafting and graphic arts tools and equipment.
  • Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
