Parks Designer

This is professional work involving the design of new parks and public open space or redevelopment of same. Responsibilities include developing conceptual plans and preparing or overseeing the preparation of detailed designs for specific park and public open space development and redevelopment proposals; preparing specifications, work plans, and preliminary cost estimates. A Park Designer attends, organizes and conducts public meetings, prepares or oversees production of graphics, public notices and related material, answers questions on proposed designs, gathers feedback and amends plans within established guidelines. Duties also include coordinating the implementation of projects with other municipal staff; obtaining necessary approvals; scheduling and monitoring the progress of approved projects, recommending changes and clarifying plans for contractors and construction personnel; preparing and maintaining project status reports, as required. Additionally, an incumbent will review development proposals and its impacts on existing and planned park land; analyze and interpret a variety of demographic, zoning and other information pertinent to park planning issues and prepare reports and recommendations on same; assist in the preparation of terms of reference and selection of consultants and oversees the work. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include university graduation in Landscape Architecture or related discipline and related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of landscape design principles and practices, construction methods, materials and horticultural techniques. Sound knowledge of the policies, procedures, and by-laws governing the work and practices and procedures applicable to municipal planning. An incumbent will have the ability to develop conceptual plans, prepare and oversee preparation of detailed specifications for park and public open space developments; organize and conduct public interest group meetings, prepare graphic presentations, resolve conflicting demands, read and interpret engineering, architectural and landscape architectural plans and the skill in the use of drafting and graphic arts tools and equipment. Registration or eligibility for registration in the Society of Landscape Architects in the Province of BC and Driver’s Licence for the Province of British are required.
